Daniel Cormier: Leon Edwards dominates against Colby Covington, but performance ‘wished for a little more’

Daniel Cormier had high expectations for the UFC 296 matchup between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington.

Edwards, the welterweight champion, secured a unanimous decision victory over Covington in the main event at T-Mobile Arena last Saturday, successfully defending his title.

Despite the pre-fight hype and tension between the two fighters, Cormier felt that the bout did not fully deliver on its potential. He expressed his desire for a more engaging and action-packed fight in a recent statement.

“Honestly, the champion’s performance was dominant, but I felt like there could have been more,” Cormier remarked in a YouTube video. “In grudge matches like this, you expect an exciting, all-action fight with some added drama.”

He pointed out that the lack of urgency and pressure from Covington was unexpected, and he did not attribute any fault to Edwards for the outcome.

“It’s not on Leon at all,” Cormier stated. “He fought in his typical style, controlling the pace of the fight. The only way this fight would have been more intriguing is if Covington had brought his usual intensity, which didn’t happen.”
