Daniel Cormier has expressed his opposition to the recent approval of 12-to-6 elbows in MMA matches, citing concerns over the resemblance to street fights.

On his YouTube channel, Cormier voiced his disapproval of 12-to-6 elbows and soccer kicks, emphasizing his desire to maintain a level of professionalism in fights and avoid a street-fight atmosphere.

The Association of Boxing Commissions recently voted to legalize 12-to-6 elbows as part of the unified MMA rules, which also includes a revision to the definition of a “downed fighter,” set to take effect on November 1.

Despite the assumption that Cormier’s opposition stems from his rivalry with Jon Jones, who was penalized for using a 12-to-6 elbow in a bout against Matt Hamill, Cormier clarified that his concerns are more expansive. He fears that allowing 12-to-6 elbows could open the door to permitting even riskier maneuvers like soccer kicks in the future.

Cormier is wary that these rule changes might steer MMA in the direction of being labeled as “human cockfighting,” echoing past criticisms by U.S. Senator John McCain. He stresses the significance of upholding clean rules and restricting hazardous techniques to uphold the sport’s credibility.
