David Benavidez, a fighter featured on the undercard, recently took a stance against boxing star Canelo Alvarez, highlighting his discontent with the high costs imposed on fans for Alvarez’s pay-per-view matches. Benavidez criticized Canelo for requiring fans to pay substantial amounts to watch his fights while also avoiding prominent opponents such as Benavidez himself and David Morrell.
Nevertheless, Benavidez’s critique of Canelo’s pay-per-view approach may appear contradictory, given that Benavidez has participated in his last two pay-per-view bouts against Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade, with the latter only drawing 60,000 purchases. The lack of fan enthusiasm led Benavidez to compete on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin fight.
Despite advocating for Canelo to face the best contenders in the field, Benavidez has been challenged by WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell on multiple occasions but has not accepted the challenge. Instead of confronting Morrell, Benavidez opted to battle Andrade on pay-per-view, a decision that failed to resonate with audiences.
In light of these circumstances, Benavidez’s criticism of Canelo for evading top-tier opponents like Morrell may seem insincere. Benavidez should concentrate on confronting more formidable challengers himself rather than reproaching Canelo for similar conduct.
