Derek Chisora believes that he is the only heavyweight capable of defeating Oleksandr Usyk. He bases his assertion on their prior encounter and his observations of Usyk’s recent training sessions.
Chisora, also known as ‘Del Boy’, faced Usyk in 2020. This bout marked Usyk’s second appearance in the heavyweight division after vacating his undisputed cruiserweight title to move up. During the fight, Chisora applied significant pressure early on, but his energy waned as the match progressed. Usyk ultimately claimed victory through a unanimous decision, with scores recorded as 115-113, 115-113, and 117-11.
Following his fight against Chisora, Usyk went on to defeat Anthony Joshua twice, securing and then defending three of the four major heavyweight belts. He also retained his titles against Daniel Dubois, and more recently, Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion by winning against Tyson Fury in a split decision.
As Usyk and Fury prepare for a rematch this month, Chisora has expressed his thoughts on the upcoming bout. In an interview with FightHub TV, he predicted that Usyk would emerge victorious once more.
Chisora commented that Fury’s sparring partners aren’t offering adequate resistance, suggesting they are too respectful of Fury and hold back during practice sessions. He believes Usyk will come out strong, maintain that intensity throughout the fight, and aim to hurt Fury, ensuring Fury does not get a moment’s rest.
Additionally, Chisora reiterated his claim of being the only heavyweight who can defeat Usyk, insisting he lost merely one round in their previous match. While opinions differ regarding the difficulty Usyk faced in that fight, it’s noteworthy that Usyk showed considerable respect for Chisora afterward, admitting that Chisora hit him harder than any other opponent had.
As Usyk gears up to face Fury, Chisora remains active and is preparing for his 49th professional fight against Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin. Chisora will need to deliver an exceptional performance if he aims to substantiate his bold claim about being the sole contender able to beat Usyk.
