Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez are gearing up for a significant bout in the super-lightweight division. Haney’s team is stipulating that Lopez undergo drug testing before the fight can be officially arranged.
The two fighters previously missed the opportunity to compete against each other in the lightweight division. Lopez lost his unified titles to George Kambosos Jr., a competitor whom Haney defeated to become the undisputed champion. Currently, both are positioned at 140 pounds. Lopez holds the WBO title after his victory over Josh Taylor, while Haney carries the title of WBC Champion in Recess following his win over Regis Prograis.
Bill Haney, who is both Devin’s father and coach, laid down a specific condition for the fight. He expressed:
“If it’s REAL beef, Teofimo Lopez stop barking and step up. Join VADA and show the world you’re clean and ready to fight Devin Haney. No excuses. No shortcuts. Champions prove they’re the best.”
Lopez responded to the condition, indicating his willingness to comply. He proposed:
“But I’m not in London! You guys are too cool. My alternative is to make a video of today’s time and date so I can get tested for all the same things Devin is getting. That good? (ABP) testing, to be exact, Mr. 2023 Manager Of The Year.”
Haney’s last bout with Ryan Garcia ended in controversy. Originally ruled as a loss for Haney, the decision was later changed to a no-contest due to Garcia’s doping violations. Haney has since initiated legal action against Garcia and enrolled in year-round VADA testing. He is planning another fight scheduled for March, nearly a year following the Garcia confrontation.
Lopez is facing contract issues with his promoter, Top Rank. His last fight resulted in a points victory over Steve Claggett in June 2024. He has been assuring his fans of “something huge” for his upcoming fight.
Both fighters are eager to establish themselves as the top competitors in the super-lightweight division. If they can come to an agreement regarding the testing, we might soon witness them resolve their rivalry in the ring.
