Oleksandr Usyk triumphed over Tyson Fury once more on December 21, 2024, claiming the title of undisputed heavyweight champion. However, there is some controversy surrounding the fight’s outcome, sparking differing opinions on how the match unfolded.
Frank Warren, who promotes Tyson Fury, insists that Fury was the rightful winner. In an interview with FightHub TV, he expressed his disbelief, saying: “No, I certainly didn’t. I can’t see how one judge didn’t give him a round from round six onwards, and the other judges gave him one round each. A neutral was Oscar De La Hoya who was sitting there, and he had Tyson winning like I did. I thought Tyson won it by a couple of rounds at least.”
Warren’s perspective aligns with Oscar De La Hoya’s, as the boxing icon similarly believed that Fury had done enough to secure the victory.
Conversely, Eddie Hearn, who is Anthony Joshua’s promoter, had a different take. Speaking to Boxing King Media, Hearn remarked: “I thought it was a draw. I thought it was very difficult to split them. I look at the reaction and most people have Usyk winning the fight, I guess. The main thing I will say is, that three judges scored it the same, and I like it when that happens because sometimes we see a lot of variation. There were a lot of close rounds, they were very difficult to split.”
Ultimately, the judges unanimously awarded the win to Usyk. Notably, one judge gave no rounds to Fury after the fifth, while the remaining two judges assigned just one round to him each.
This bout served as a sequel to their previous encounter in May 2024, which Usyk also won. Prior to these victories, Usyk had successfully defeated Anthony Joshua in two consecutive matches.
With his status as the undisputed champion preserved, Usyk may face Daniel Dubois again or attempt to unify the heavyweight division further.
For Tyson Fury, retirement might be on the horizon. Nevertheless, discussions about a potential final match against Anthony Joshua continue to surface as he contemplates ending his illustrious career.
