Wladimir Klitschko is contemplating a return to the boxing ring at the age of 48. The former heavyweight champion aims to surpass George Foreman’s record as the oldest heavyweight titleholder.

Klitschko retired from boxing in 2017 after being stopped by Anthony Joshua. Prior to that, he had dominated the heavyweight division for years. From 2008 to 2015, he held the status of unified champion, successfully defending his titles 23 times across two reigns. His winning streak came to an end in 2015 when Tyson Fury defeated him in a major upset.

At 48, Klitschko is being mentioned in connection with some high-profile bouts. There was speculation about him facing Daniel Dubois, the IBF World Champion, who recently defeated Joshua in five rounds. Dubois’ promoter, Frank Warren, discussed their conversation with the Daily Mail, saying it was brief yet full of respect, acknowledging Klitschko’s excellent physical condition despite his age.

That match, however, will not take place. Dubois is instead scheduled to fight Joseph Parker on February 22 of the following year.

There are also discussions about Klitschko potentially fighting Tyson Fury if Fury prevails over Oleksandr Usyk. Turki Alalshikh, a prominent figure in boxing, expressed his desire to see such a fight, envisioning Klitschko’s opportunity to become the oldest heavyweight champion, a prospect only possible if he doesn’t face fellow Ukrainian Usyk.

Deontay Wilder’s name has also surfaced in the mix. According to Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, Klitschko’s legendary status makes him a compelling opponent. Scott indicated that if Klitschko’s rumored return is true, a match with Wilder would garner significant attention and could be one of the biggest heavyweight clashes in history.

However, a significant uncertainty surrounds these potential matches. Due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, it’s unclear if Klitschko will be willing to leave Ukraine to pursue any fights. The situation remains to be seen.
