Former UFC prospect and teammate of Charles Oliveira, Mateus Mendoca, has experienced one of the most unique and bizarre injuries in the history of MMA.
After earning a UFC contract through a victory on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, Mendoca found himself in a challenging situation when he was paired with Javid Basharat for his first fight.
The Brazilian fighter went on to compete three times under the UFC banner, unfortunately losing all three bouts, which ultimately led to his release from the promotion.
Following his departure from the UFC, the 25-year-old made a return to the regional scene in Brazil, achieving a first-round submission victory this past October.
However, shortly after his comeback win, Mendoca suffered an extremely unfortunate and unprecedented injury that has become one of the most talked-about incidents in the sport’s history.
Recently, the 25-year-old disclosed that he fractured his penis while training in jiu-jitsu, which necessitated emergency surgery.
Mendoca trains at the Chute Box gym alongside UFC star Charles Oliveira, and he admitted to rolling without a protective cup, a mistake he vows never to repeat.
“I was training with a teammate. He landed his knee on my penis, and I felt an absurd pain. I went to the bathroom, and while I was in São Paulo, it looked weird, it felt different; there was a lump,” he shared with AgFight.
“My girl urged me to go to the hospital, where they performed an ultrasound and then instructed me to head to another hospital immediately for emergency surgery,” he continued.
Throughout the three-decade history of the UFC, fighters have endured numerous severe injuries, some more common than others.
Anderson Silva’s horrifying leg break against Chris Weidman in 2013 is considered one of the most devastating injuries to occur inside the octagon, much like Conor McGregor’s ankle break against Dustin Poirier in 2021.
Among other notable injuries, Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s unforgettable battle with Zhang Weili in 2020 led to her appearing almost unrecognizable after five grueling rounds, displaying what looked like a second head due to swelling.
