From uncertainty to relief to chaos.

Kody Steele (6-0) went through a range of emotions as he prepared for his expected fight on Dana White’s Contender Series airing tonight (Tues., Sept. 10, 2024). The promising prospect in the Welterweight and Lightweight divisions was all set to meet Quemuel Ottoni, the only fighter to conquer UFC Light Heavyweight champion Alex Pereira in an MMA bout, but Ottoni backed out abruptly.

Ottoni, aged 31, initially withdrew from the matchup just an hour before the scheduled fight, revealed Steele’s coach, William Tackett. There was a brief moment of hope when Ottoni decided to participate, but unfortunately, he experienced a panic attack, resulting in the fight being called off. White assured Steele of his payment and a future chance to compete on an upcoming Contender Series event.

Tackett recounted the last-minute turn of events on Instagram, stating, “Kody’s opponent just withdrew less than an hour before the UFC contender series due to ‘not feeling it.’ We had to take off Kody’s wraps suddenly as he started his warm-up. Just five minutes later, we were informed that his opponent had returned, and the fight was back on! The goal remains unchanged [swords emoji] it’s time to go.”

This incident marks the 14th canceled fight in Ottoni’s 15-match career (12-3). Ottoni has encountered several cancellations throughout his career, including a bout against Paulo Costa and the noted win over Pereira in 2015. Despite these setbacks, Ottoni will have another opportunity to demonstrate his skills in the future.
