Ian Machado Garry is disappointed with top UFC welterweights for allegedly passing on fight opportunities.
With short notice, Ian Machado Garry is gearing up to take on the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. This crucial bout will decide the number one contender in the welterweight division after Belal Muhammad withdrew due to injury.
Initially, Garry was slated to headline UFC Tampa against Joaquin Buckley before the Rakhmonov matchup emerged. Since his win over Michael ‘Venom’ Page at UFC 303, Garry has been in search of an opponent, even trying unsuccessfully to entice Colby Covington into a fight.
Garry has also shown interest in facing Kamaru Usman, the former welterweight champion who hasn’t competed at 170lbs since back-to-back losses to Leon Edwards.
Despite Usman appearing unfazed by the recent criticism, Garry believes the backlash against him is warranted.
Garry Slams Kamaru Usman for Opting for Easier Fights
In a recent interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Garry didn’t mince words in his criticism of Usman.
“Usman talks a big game but doesn’t back it up,” Garry remarked. “He may seem tough, but when it comes down to it, he falls short. Usman and Colby are seasoned competitors, yet as they near the end of their careers, they seek out less challenging opponents. I wouldn’t be surprised if Usman looks to go up against Jack Della Maddalena following Gilbert Burns’ dominant display against him.”
“If I were in Usman’s shoes, I’d dodge opponents who pose a challenge and instead pick someone more susceptible to takedowns. I have no doubt that Usman would opt for the JDM fight as he lacks mental fortitude.”
As of now, Usman has not responded to Garry’s remarks.
Usman Addresses Criticism after Declining Short-Notice UFC 310 Fight Offer
Usman hasn’t seen action since his defeat to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 in the prior year. He is looking to make a comeback to the Octagon in 2025, but it’s uncertain whether he will return to welterweight or continue competing at middleweight.
Garry maintains a flawless UFC record, triumphing over Daniel Rodriguez, Geoff Neal, and Neil Magny recently. A win against Rakhmonov could put him in line for a title shot against Muhammad.
If Usman makes a return to the welterweight division, a potential showdown between him and Garry looms on the horizon. Tensions are escalating between these two notable fighters in the division.
