Jorge Masvidal created history by becoming the first Baddest Motherf—ker (BMF) champion, which led to his initial UFC title clash against Kamaru Usman in July 2020. Sadly, the circumstances were not favorable for Masvidal as Usman was supposed to defend his belt against Gilbert Burns, but Burns had to pull out due to contracting COVID-19. Masvidal eventually got the title shot on a mere six days’ notice after failing to reach agreement with the UFC.

Reflecting on this opportunity, Masvidal drew parallels to his previous endeavors, such as his first Strikeforce title shot in 2011 where he earned a meager $16,000. Despite the short notice, Masvidal fought for a better deal and ended up making more money than ever before. Nevertheless, he still ponders over whether it was the right call, especially after his loss to Usman.

Following a one-sided defeat to Usman, Masvidal was granted a swift rematch at UFC 261 in April 2021, where he faced a second-round knockout. He is gearing up for his next bout, a boxing rematch against Nate Diaz set for July 6, 2024.
