A fire at a mixed martial arts gym in the Midway area resulted in the evacuation of nearby hotels and road closures on Thursday morning.
The San Diego Fire Rescue arrived at Victory MMA Fitness Center at around 6:20 a.m. and found heavy flames coming from the second floor.
According to the San Diego police, a mixed martial arts class was in session at the time, but all gym members were safely evacuated before the firefighters and staff arrived. The nearby Wyndham Garden Hotel was also evacuated.
The San Diego Fire Rescue reported that a fire was seen in the sauna’s heating unit, and the cause is still being investigated.
The fire was still active at about 7 a.m., during which time Midway Drive between Kemper and Duke streets was closed. However, the road reopened later that morning.
As of now, there have been no reports of injuries, and the extent of the fire damage is still unclear.
