Shawne Merriman, a former NFL All-Pro linebacker, became intrigued by MMA after attending a UFC event in 2005 featuring Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell. He connected with Couture through FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, an MMA enthusiast. Merriman decided to delve into the sport, integrating it into his offseason training regimen. Training with Couture in 2006 deepened his passion for MMA. In 2019, Merriman founded his own MMA promotion, Lights Out Xtreme Fighting, and launched the Lights Out Sports streaming app. He predicts that the next MMA star will likely arise from football, specifically a strong safety, linebacker, or defensive end with the necessary athleticism and determination. Merriman anticipates a rise in NFL players transitioning to MMA due to the sport’s burgeoning financial prospects. Recognizable NFL figures, successful on the field, could attract a broader audience and increase their earnings in MMA. Within the next few years, Merriman envisions several NFL professionals making the switch to MMA, noting their growing interest and dedication to training in the discipline. He envisions a future where one or two of these committed athletes ascend to become champions in the MMA realm.
