Francis Ngannou took a significant risk on himself.

Ngannou became the UFC Heavyweight Champion in 2021 but had only one fight left on his contract. Instead of renewing his contract early like most champions do, he took a gamble on himself by declining extension offers and fought out his contract to become a free agent. This move was a bold one that paid off in the end.

During a discussion with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo on the pound 4 pounds show, Ngannou admitted to turning down UFC negotiations and his final fight with the organization, where he was supposed to earn $600,000. He mentioned that at that time, he even owed Usman $200,000, eventually leading to financial struggles.

Ngannou’s risk paid off when he defeated Cyrille Gane in his last UFC fight and declined a $8 million offer from the UFC to fight Jon Jones. Instead, he chose to become a free agent and signed a lucrative deal with the PFL, opening up opportunities for boxing matches, including ones with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Ngannou said he would make the same choice again, emphasizing the importance of staying true to his goals and principles.

Ngannou explained that he prioritized his dreams and values over financial gains, highlighting the significance of being true to oneself. He asserted that he would not compromise his goals for money, reflecting on his unwavering commitment to his aspirations.

Though he is now focused on boxing, Ngannou remains connected with the PFL to potentially return to MMA in 2025. Despite enjoying boxing, he admitted missing MMA and the familiarity it provided.

Ngannou expressed his sentiment of missing MMA but acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to boxing. He recognized the adjustment needed in the new sport and reflected on the comfort MMA had provided him with its familiarity and experience.
