Frank Bruno, the former heavyweight boxer who faced Mike Tyson twice in the ring, believes Muhammad Ali would come out on top in a hypothetical match-up against Tyson.
Bruno, who lost both his fights against Tyson, shared his thoughts in a recent interview with TNT Sports Boxing. Despite experiencing Tyson’s power firsthand, Bruno couldn’t bet against “The Greatest.”
“I gotta go for Muhammad Ali. Tyson at his prime, when he was about 21, was a very, very dangerous human being. But I would never, ever bet against Muhammad Ali because he was the godfather. Opened a lot of doors for a lot of people. Very, very genuine human being and a very special man.”
Bruno’s respect for Ali goes beyond just his boxing skills. He points out Ali’s impact outside the ring, calling him “the godfather” who opened doors for many people.
Ali, known for his fast feet and lightning-quick reflexes, was an enigma in the heavyweight division. He held the undisputed championship for four years in the 1970s and finished his career with 61 fights and only 5 losses.
Tyson, on the other hand, made history as the youngest world heavyweight champion ever. His speed and power helped him become the undisputed champion from 1987 to 1990. Bruno faced Tyson twice during this period – once during Tyson’s undisputed reign and again for the WBC title after Tyson’s stint in prison. Both times, Bruno was stopped.
Despite his personal experiences with Tyson’s formidable skills, Bruno believes even Tyson himself would choose Ali if asked about this hypothetical match-up.
Tyson recently made headlines when he returned to the ring for a controversial eight-round match against Jake Paul. Following this bout, Tyson retired for a second time, closing another chapter in his storied career.
While we’ll never know for sure how a fight between Ali and Tyson would have played out, Bruno’s perspective offers an interesting insight from someone who has been in the ring with one of these legendary fighters.
