Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia are in discussions about a potential rematch. The two boxers initially competed against each other in April 2023, and they are now attempting to negotiate the terms for a second bout. However, they are currently at an impasse regarding the fight’s weight class.
Their initial encounter was a significant event, taking place at the Barclays Center in New York. Davis emerged victorious by knocking out Garcia in the 7th round, having already dropped him in the 2nd round. The bout culminated with Davis delivering a decisive body shot, leaving Garcia unable to rise before the referee’s count concluded.
Now, Garcia is advocating for a fight at 144 pounds, expressing that he felt overly depleted at the previous, lower weight. He conveyed his stance publicly via social media, stating:
“Everyone wanna talk about the little stupid Tank. Let’s fight. Enough of that funny talk. Come see me at 144 and let’s stop the talk.”
Conversely, Davis is hesitant to compete at such a high weight and prefers the 140-pound limit, the official super-lightweight category. In a conversation with ESNews, Davis elaborated on his perspective:
“Yeah [it’s a massive fight]. But not at 143 [or 144], why 143? Probably at 140, that’s the next weight class up from 135, it’s the weight class he fights at. Let’s do 140 and he can rehydrate back up to 150, or the most 152, I’m 135 brother.”
If they fail to reach an agreement, Davis may consider seeking an alternative opponent for his next bout. One potential option could be Shakur Stevenson. For the time being, fans will have to remain patient and see if Davis and Garcia can resolve their weight class differences to facilitate a rematch.
