Gervonta Davis has changed his mind about fighting Shakur Stevenson. The undefeated lightweight boxer now says he’s not interested in a match-up with his fellow champion.
Davis and Stevenson have been on a collision course for some time. Both fighters are undefeated, with Davis known for his knockout power and Stevenson for his defensive skills. Fans have been eager to see how these contrasting styles would play out in the ring.
Earlier, Davis had shown interest in fighting Stevenson. He even put Stevenson on his ‘hit-list’ for future fights. But now, Davis has completely dismissed the idea.
At a press conference for his upcoming March 1 fight against Lamont Roach Jr, Davis made his new stance clear. When asked about a potential fight with Stevenson, he didn’t hold back:
"For what? What has Shakur done in the sport? He hasn’t done nothing. The young ones looking better than him. Keyshawn looking way more better than this n*a. Y’all keep screaming his name, he hasn’t done nothing. Fk y’all keep saying his name for?"
Davis went on to address any suggestions that he might be afraid of Stevenson:
"Afraid of what? Us fighters, if we’re afraid of somebody it gotta be somebody hitting us and hurting us. He don’t have no offence. Everything is defence. Defence only win in defence and football. That s**t don’t win in boxing."
Davis claims Stevenson hasn’t accomplished enough in boxing to warrant a fight. He also believes younger boxers are performing better than Stevenson and criticizes Stevenson’s fighting style as too defensive.
While Davis prepares for his fight with Roach, Stevenson is set to face Floyd Schofield on February 22. Davis has also mentioned plans to retire in 2025, with only three fights left in his career.
Fans who were hoping to see Davis and Stevenson square off before Davis hangs up his gloves might be disappointed by this turn of events. But in boxing, things can change quickly, and there’s always a chance these two champions could meet in the ring before Davis calls it quits.
For now, all eyes will be on Davis’ upcoming fight with Roach, as fans wait to see if ‘Tank’ will change his mind about Stevenson once again.
