Devin Haney considers moving up to welterweight division after Mario Barrios becomes full WBC champion

Devin Haney recently showed interest in Mario Barrios’ new WBC welterweight title on social media, implying a potential showdown for the championship. There are talks that Haney might give up his WBC 140-lb title to step up and take on Barrios for the 147-lb title.

This move could be a smart strategy for Haney as he eyes a chance to challenge a possibly vulnerable champion like Barrios and leave the 140-lb division. Earlier disappointments arose when Top Rank won the purse bid for Haney’s mandatory defense against Sandor Martin with a not-so-ideal bid, prompting Haney to think about moving up to welterweight for better options.

While there aren’t many lucrative fights in the welterweight division except for a potential match against Ryan Garcia down the line, Haney seems committed to bide his time and perhaps make a comeback after Garcia’s suspension. The opportunity to vie for Barrios’ WBC title is still a possibility in the near future.
