Jon Jones has been hailed as one of the greatest UFC fighters in history, consistently defeating top contenders throughout different eras.
Hailing from New York, Jones recently defended his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, hinting at a possible transition to a new phase of his career. Prior to claiming the heavyweight championship in the previous year, Jones had already made a name for himself as a dominant light-heavyweight, with numerous significant wins under his belt.
During his time in the 205-pound weight class, he faced tough opponents like Rampage Jackson, Daniel Cormier, and Alexander Gustafsson. Despite a notable disqualification due to a rule that has since been amended, Jones emerged victorious against every contender he encountered.
Jon Jones on the Most Powerful Punch He’s Faced
When looking back on the hardest punch he ever received, Jon Jones recalls a moment in April 2012. During his early 20s, he was up against the experienced Rashad Evans in his third title defense in the light-heavyweight division.
He vividly remembers getting hit with a strong overhand right that momentarily stunned him. This same punch had previously knocked out renowned fighters like Chuck Liddell. In a conversation with Adin Ross during their training session together, Jones recounted the impact of that punch.
“The hardest punch I ever took was from a fighter named Suga Rashad Evans,” he shared. “He landed an overhand right—the very same punch he used to drop Chuck Liddell. It wasn’t just about the power; it was the speed of the punch. It felt like a lightning-fast overhand slap. The speed caught me off guard completely.”
“He connected perfectly at the edge of my chin, and for a moment, I lost my legs’ control. I managed to regain my composure and footing, but that hit was the fastest I’ve ever experienced—thankfully, I didn’t get knocked out, which easily could have happened.”
Jon Jones Reflects on Victories, Including Stipe Miocic
Jones’ most recent notable triumph was at UFC 309, where he fought against Stipe Miocic, the accomplished heavyweight contender in UFC history. Jones clinched a victory in three rounds and celebrated by meeting with President-elect Donald Trump.
“Tonight was truly special,” Jones expressed in his post-fight press conference. “Winning over Daniel Cormier [later deemed a No Contest] also holds significant meaning for me. Stephan Bonnar was a notable early opponent in my career.”
“Many doubted my capabilities and said I would not succeed. I had to focus on meditation and boost my self-confidence to overcome Stephan Bonnar. Mauricio ‘Shogun’ showed me that greatness was attainable.
“Coming from humble beginnings and not excelling at anything previously, rising to become a champion is truly remarkable. The bout with D.C. held personal significance for me, and this night felt like the peak of my life.
“Having the opportunity to speak about my faith in front of our president and express my pride as an American champion was incredible. Securing the win against Stipe was an indescribable feeling.”
