After capturing the WBA super-welterweight title by defeating Israil Madrimov in August 2023, Terence Crawford’s future is uncertain as he stands as a four-weight-class champion.
His recent victory at 154lbs showcased his adaptability in moving up weight classes from his previous fights at 147lbs.
Currently, Crawford is at a crossroads in his career, contemplating a potential bout against Canelo Alvarez at 168lbs for the unified super-middleweight title. This move would require Crawford to jump significantly in weight from his pro debut at 135lbs.
If the matchup with Canelo doesn’t come to fruition, there are talks of Crawford considering retirement. Trainer Robert Garcia shared his thoughts on Fighthype, stating:
“Crawford is a smart man. He has accomplished a lot and doesn’t feel the need to prove himself further.”
Garcia continued:
“From our conversations, it’s evident that Crawford wants that significant fight with Canelo. If that doesn’t happen, he might opt out of entering the ring again. He doesn’t seek unnecessary challenges when his achievements speak volumes.”
Garcia believes Crawford won’t be swayed by fan expectations for specific matchups but will instead pursue meaningful fights or life beyond boxing.
“I don’t see him succumbing to pressure from fans to face certain opponents. He’ll seek the best opportunities, and if they don’t arise, he’ll choose a life beyond boxing.”
Throughout his career, Crawford has excelled in different weight classes, showcasing his exceptional skills. The decision whether to embrace a new challenge or retire at his peak remains to be seen.
Crawford’s recent victory over Madrimov proves he is still at the top of his game. The question of his return to the ring lingers, but one thing is clear – he has nothing left to prove.
