Jon Jones is currently taking shots at Colby Covington, following Covington’s one-sided defeat against Joaquin Buckley.
Covington and Jones shared a brief period as roommates at Iowa Central Community College, and over the years, Covington has made numerous outlandish claims about Jones from their time together. In the lead-up to the Buckley fight, Covington repeatedly criticized Jones for what he described as “fruity” behavior, specifically mentioning Jones’s past with nail polish and a pink singlet.
In a recent interview with MMA Guru, who also produced a humorous yet factually questionable 45-minute YouTube video implying that Jones is gay, Covington insinuated that Jones disguised unwanted sexual advances as playful wrestling.
In a tweet, Covington recounted how he had to put a stop to what he perceived as Jones’ inappropriate behavior, claiming it was masked as “wrestling practice.” He characterized Jones’ wrestling approach as having “fruity tendencies,” suggesting that it felt almost like he wanted to “grope” him.
Covington may have benefited from focusing on improving his wrestling takedowns instead of engaging in verbal jabs, as he suffered a significant defeat at the hands of Buckley in Tampa. This loss now leaves his record over the last five years at 2-4, effectively ending his hopes of re-entering title contention. Following the fight, he attributed his loss to a lack of preparation because he was busy helping Donald Trump with his 2024 election campaign.
In response, Jones has been quick to mock Covington for his excuses.
“Big shoutout to Colby Covington for skipping training to get President Trump ‘ready’—we all appreciate the sacrifice,” Jones tweeted. He added, “At least he got to see me win,” emphasizing his amusement at Covington’s predicament.
Jones further expressed his enjoyment of the situation, stating, “That’s what I find the most hilarious—listening to what he’s gonna come up with next after getting his ass whooped.”
When a fan suggested that Jones ignore Covington because he’s a “bum,” Jones admitted, “I know I shouldn’t but it’s just so much fun. It’s amusing watching someone you know hate you fail repeatedly.”
Another user on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that “Colby fought a dangerous contender at 37 years old on short notice. You can ONLY dream of that,” to which Jones retorted, “Yeah, I could only dream of making such a dumb decision. Being on a losing streak. You’re right I can only dream.”
Currently, Jones boasts an impressive record of 28-1-1. He recently claimed victory over former champion Stipe Miocic to defend his heavyweight title. Fans eagerly await his next matchup, with speculation surrounding his potential defense against the true No. 1 contender and interim champion, Tom Aspinall. UFC CEO Dana White has assured fans that this fight will definitely happen.
