Jon Jones, the current UFC heavyweight champion, has been charged with assault by an agent from Drug Free Sports International (DFSI), an organization responsible for collecting samples for the UFC’s anti-doping program.

The recent incident unfolded on Friday night (April 6, 2024), when DFSI agent Crystal Martinez reported to the Albuquerque police about a troubling episode that took place during a random drug sampling at Jones’ residence on March 30. The news of these allegations emerged thereafter.

According to Martinez, Jones initially cooperated with the request for a urine sample but later became angry, threatening legal action against her and another DFSI staff member. Subsequently, he took Martinez’s phone, recorded a video of her expressing dissatisfaction with a drug tester in the garage, and kept the phone in his possession while refusing to hand it back.

The police verified the video’s contents in the initial incident report.

Martinez claims that Jones then made menacing remarks, saying, “You know the consequences for individuals who arrive at my house early? They end up harmed.”

These actions led to charges of assault and obstruction of communication. NBC News has covered the incident. Jones received a summons that included an “arrest component” at his residence. The UFC champion was not taken into custody.

In response, Jones refuted Martinez’s allegations and shared a video showing Martinez exchanging high-fives with the tester as he departed the premises.

As per the police report accompanying the citation, Jones explained to the officers that Martinez appeared displeased due to his use of offensive language in the garage. According to his account, he remarked: “[DFSI] Headquarters can be a hazardous setting, so please refrain from sending individuals to my residence too early.”

At present, the UFC has not issued any statements or remarks concerning the incident involving Jones.
