Jorge Masvidal Discusses Why a Conor McGregor Showdown is Unlikely Despite His Passion for UFC Super Fights

Conor McGregor is at the top of Jorge Masvidal’s hit list.

‘Gamebred’ retired in 2023 following four consecutive defeats, but after a couple of boxing bouts, including a majority decision loss to Nate Diaz, he’s set to return to MMA next year.

The former BMF champion claims he will make his UFC comeback in April at a show in Miami.

However, nothing is official as he’s still looking for a big-name opponent to face.

In an ideal world, Conor McGregor would be Jorge Masvidal’s comeback opponent.

The former dual-weight UFC champion hasn’t fought since breaking his leg during a trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Even though he’s fully fit, McGregor’s eagerly anticipated UFC return has been hit by repeat delays, with Dana White claiming he won’t fight until the end of 2025.

Masvidal doesn’t want to end up like Michael Chandler, who spent two years on the sidelines waiting for his ‘Red Panty Night’ with MMA’s biggest star to come off.

‘Street Jesus’ would love to fight McGregor but he has come to the conclusion that it won’t happen because the Irishman will never compete again.

“I’d love it, but I’m not waiting around for him,” Masvidal said about McGregor during an interview with Sportsbook Review.

“I respect what Chandler was doing, he did the Ultimate Fighter with him, he was protecting his bag, but I’m not about to do that. I’m not sitting around for nobody.

“Let that guy live his f*** life, but he isn’t fighting. I don’t see it in him. I see it in his eyes, he isn’t about the fight life anymore. I don’t see him fighting again, not with his current lifestyle.”

With McGregor out of the question, Masvidal has set his sights on a grudge match with Leon Edwards.

The two men have been beefing for years after a backstage incident at UFC London in March 2019.

Masvidal famously sucker-punched Edwards before mocking his rival by claiming he hit him with a ‘three-piece and the soda’.

Five years later, they still haven’t fought in the Octagon. Edwards went on to become the 170lb champion before losing his belt to Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 in July.

Masvidal insists now is the time for them to finally throw down with UFC gloves on.

He added: “Leon Edwards is the fight I want, I just want the chance to fight him. Leon’s the number one guy I’m targeting.

“I’ve never been a guy to go after number 30. I’ve always chosen to fight the best guy around, which has probably not been the best approach, but f*** I love to fight.

“Me and Leon have a little bit of history. He’s a great competitor, but I know I’ve got his number. I know he can’t impose his wrestling on me, he’s not that level of wrestler. His striking is good but I’m better, I’m more durable.

“I know I can f* this guy up. All he has to say is ‘I want to fight that motherf***r’ and it happens. I’m one of the top pay-per-view draws. I’m in the top three pay-per-view draws. Do you want to make this money or not?”
