Leon Edwards, the current UFC welterweight champion, has expressed interest in a future bout against Islam Makhachev. After Makhachev called him out following his victory over Dustin Poirier, Edwards acknowledged the challenge but feels that both fighters have more to achieve in their respective weight classes before a potential showdown.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Edwards suggested that Makhachev should face more lightweight contenders before considering a move up to the welterweight division. Nonetheless, he is open to the possibility of a future clash with Makhachev given their similar ages and ample time to arrange the fight.

Presently, Edwards is concentrating on defending his welterweight title against Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. If successful, his next opponent could be Shavkat Rakhmonov, while Makhachev’s lightweight No. 1 contender, Arman Tsarukyan, is awaiting a shot at the lightweight championship.

At this point, Edwards aims to clear the contenders in his division before entertaining any potential super fights. He believes there are still challenges to overcome within his weight class before exploring matchups outside of it.
