Amanda Nunes had previously been associated with American Top Team with the goal of climbing the bantamweight rankings and claiming UFC gold. Now, ATT’s talent Maira Bueno Silva is aiming for the same accomplishment.

In the co-main event of UFC 297, Silva will challenge Raquel Pennington for the 135-pound title, which became vacant following Nunes’ retirement in 2023. Despite Nunes’ departure from ATT in her later years and the establishment of her own team in Florida, it is a significant moment for Marcos “Palumpinha” Damatta, the coach, as he sees an opportunity for the team to reclaim the championship.

However, a match between Pennington and Silva was almost canceled after the Brazilian tested positive for the ADHD drug ritalinic acid. While USADA did not suspend Silva, the Nevada State Athletic Commission imposed a four and a half month suspension on her.

Damatta expressed his confidence in Silva, emphasizing her mental strength and the fact that she has been using the drug since childhood. He also expressed gratitude towards UFC for their support and expressed his commitment to working towards Silva’s fight against Juliana Peña for the title in early 2024.

Silva’s submission win over Holly Holm was nullified due to a failed drug test, but Damatta remains confident in her abilities and believes she will prove herself as a UFC champion alongside teammate Alexandre Pantoja at the upcoming event in Toronto.

Damatta emphasized their high expectations for the upcoming fight and expressed confidence in Silva’s preparation and energy, stating that they are approaching the fight with positivity and a strong training camp.
