After accomplishing his dream of becoming the 2024 National Golden Gloves champion at 165 pounds, Marco Romero quickly shifted his focus to his upcoming professional boxing debut. The 18-year-old fighter from Olathe, Kansas, participated in five matches within six days during the tournament, even missing his high school graduation in the process.
Despite the rapid transition, Romero wasted no time and started training for his professional debut scheduled for Saturday, June 15 in Portland, Maine. He is set to go against Jonathan Gary, a former MMA fighter now turned boxer, in a four-round super middleweight fight. Romero received ongoing support and guidance from his father Salvador as he made the move into the professional boxing circuit.
Romero had a successful amateur career with numerous wins in various tournaments. With around 135 fights under his belt and only five losses, he displayed his boxing abilities and talent in the ring. Although he wasn’t able to compete internationally due to external factors, Romero remains determined to achieve success as a professional boxer.
Under the mentorship of experienced coach John Brown for the past eight years, Romero is geared up to establish his name in the professional boxing arena. He aims to work his way down to 154 pounds and create a commendable record before potentially signing with a prominent promotion such as Top Rank or Golden Boy.
The upcoming event in Portland this Saturday will showcase other skilled boxers like bantamweight contender Dylan Price and light heavyweight Kendrick Ball Jr. This event marks a notable return of boxing to the Cross Insurance Arena since 1994, promising an enthralling night of fights for the attending fans.
