The World Boxing Council (WBC) has officially promoted Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) to the position of full welterweight champion. This decision came after Terence Crawford was labeled as the ‘Champion in recess’ when he moved up to 154.

Barrios was expected to be named the full champion earlier, but for reasons unknown, the WBC delayed the decision. Nevertheless, Barrios is thrilled to now hold the prestigious WBC 147-pound title, opening the door for potential major bouts against the likes of Manny Pacquiao or Devin Haney.

Barrios had previously claimed the WBC interim title by defeating Yordenis Ugas and successfully defended it once against Fabian Maidana. He has also secured victories over Jovanie Santiago.

With the full WBC belt now in his possession, Barrios has a chance to unify with IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis if he is willing to take on the challenge. Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn, is keen on setting up the fight and offering Barrios a substantial payday.

While Barrios may face challenges against top contenders due to his weaknesses, his recent wins illustrate his progress. Although he had setbacks against Keith Thurman and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis previously, he has made a comeback since then.

A potential unification bout with Ennis could present Barrios with a lucrative opportunity if matches with Pacquiao or Haney do not materialize.
