The recent weigh-in for Mark Magsayo brought some unexpected drama, but this time it wasn’t due to any fault of his own.

The former WBC featherweight titleholder weighed in at 130.7 pounds on Friday afternoon, just below his contracted weight of 131 pounds for the upcoming eight-round fight against Isaac Avelar (who weighed 132.4 pounds). An agreement was reached for Magsayo to move up to 133 pounds and proceed with the fight.

“I feel very strong and comfortable at this weight. “I’ve been fighting at featherweight for 10 years, but this is the first time I’ve fought at 130. I felt even stronger today,” said Magsayo, who is promoted by MP Promotions and TGB Promotions.

This will be Magsayo’s (24-2, 16 KOs) first fight since facing back-to-back defeats against Rey Vargas and Brandon Figueroa. Magsayo, 28, expressed his excitement about moving up in weight, having fought at featherweight since his professional debut 10 years ago.

Magsayo’s struggle with the scales was most notably seen in his recent bout with Figueroa, where he initially missed the 126-pound limit, only to return to the scales about two hours later for a WBC interim title fight. Figueroa eventually won by unanimous decision.

Avelar Avelar (17-6, 10 KOs) from Aguascalientes, Mexico has suffered four losses in his last five fights, including an eighth-round TKO loss to Carlos Arteaga in his most recent bout in April.

The match is set to take place at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California, as part of a card promoted by Alex Camponovo. The televised match will be broadcast live in Spanish on Fox Deportes, with the remainder of the card, including Magsayo vs. Avelar, also being aired live at www.fightstars.network.

In the main event, Brandon Benitez (20-2, 8 KOs) from Queretaro, Mexico will take on Rigoberto Hermosillo (14-4-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout. Benitez weighed 125.3 pounds and Hermosillo 125.9 pounds. The Benitez vs. Hermosillo match will also be broadcast on Fox Deportes, along with three other matches.

“Leoncito” Benitez, 25, is currently on a six-fight winning streak, while Hermosillo from Guadalajara, Mexico, has won three consecutive bouts after a string of losses that included a split decision loss to Magsayo.
