Former pro wrestler Matt Cardona always had a passion for the sport from a young age and eventually turned his dream into a reality by entering the world of WWE. Now, he is setting his sights on further accomplishments outside of the WWE. Cardona recently opened up about his childhood aspiration of being a wrestler and his mindset following his departure from WWE back in 2020.
“Yeah, it’s the only thing I ever wanted to do. I was obsessed with it, watching it on TV, playing with wrestling toys, and grappling with my brothers and friends in the backyard. After college, I told my parents, ‘I’m going to be a pro wrestler.’ They thought I was crazy,” Cardona shared in an interview on Dr. Beau Hightower’s YouTube channel.
After spending 14 years with WWE, having joined the company at the age of 20 in 2006, Cardona reflected on how he viewed his release from WWE. Rather than feeling discouraged, he took it as an opportunity to redefine himself with a new persona.
“When I got released in 2020, I knew that this wasn’t the end of my career but the beginning. I changed my name to my real name, Matt Cardona, and reinvented myself. This has been the most successful time in my career,” he explained.
Referred to as “The Indy God,” Cardona has enjoyed substantial success in various wrestling promotions over the past four years, claiming championships and establishing himself as a prominent figure in the independent wrestling scene. Despite his accomplishments, he remains driven to achieve more and hasn’t ruled out a potential comeback to WWE.
