Morning Report: Chatri Sichhoten explains why UFC roster is full of ‘sloppy mediocre striking’ – MMA Fighting

ONE Championship’s Chatri Sitoyotton is confident his product provides more entertainment than the UFC.

ONE Fight Night 14 sees the promotion return to Singapore this Friday night for the first time since March. This is only his second event held in the country where ONE previously held the majority of its events. Bangkok, Thailand’s Lumphini Boxing Stadium has all but taken over as the home of ONE in 2023, hosting event after event with countless thrilling bouts making up each card.

Perhaps Sitoyotton’s biggest selling point with ONE is that it has evolved into promoting mixed martial arts, including not just MMA, but Muay Thai, kickboxing, and grappling matches. ONE has a clear focus on striking, which Sitoyotton believes gives him a distinct advantage over everything else.

“I think most fans, especially those who watch ONE Friday Fights, would say ONE is the most exciting promotion. It’s insane and Joe Rogan came out yesterday or the day before and said, ‘ONE is the most exciting promotion. I think he said, ‘We have the most exciting product,’ and I agree,” Citoyotton told the media after ONE Fight Night 14 (h/t) South China Morning Post).

“What you see in the UFC, for example, is very sloppy, mediocre striking, because they’re not strikers. The typical UFC fighter is a D-1 college wrestler with a 7-0 record in the minor leagues. , then do a little bit of hitting and then get into the UFC. In ONE, they’re world champions before they arrive, and they’re already multiple champions. [time] The world champion is at the peak of his career when he arrives. From Anissa Mexen [Jonathan] Dibella of Rodtan [Jitmuangnon]or tawan chai [P.K. Saenchai]superbon [Singha Mawynn] …or any of these legal killers.

“That’s what makes us different. If you look at our roster, I think the UFC has about 700 athletes, and we’re about the same. Around there. But, If you look at the number of world championship titles that our fighters won before joining ONE, that’s half of the organization. If you go to UFC or Bellator, it’s probably around 20 or up to 30. That’s why. Whereas you see a lot of sloppy jiu-jitsu and sloppy low-level striking in these organizations, ONE has some of the best fighters on the planet in their respective disciplines, and of course in MMA. Make no mistake, we are the best in the world. I think it’s the most exciting experience for the fans inside.”

ONE and the UFC are no strangers to each other, having completed the only trade in MMA history in 2019 with the exchange of Ben Askren and Demetrius Johnson. Former ONE Bantamweight Champion John Lineker faced Stefan Roman in his last bout, defeating him by unanimous decision.

In the main event of ONE Fight Night 14, former UFC strawweight and Korean pioneer Seo Hee Ham faced Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex for the vacant 115-pound atomweight title. After putting up a tough fight in the first two rounds, Stamp defeated the veteran Hamm with an impressive third-round TKO with body punches. As a result, Stamp is currently the ONE Champion in Muay Thai and Kickboxing, and holds three different martial arts titles. Thus, she became “the greatest pound-for-pound female fighter on the planet,” Citoyotton said.

“People definitely understand the difference in level between our strikers and UFC strikers. It’s not even close,” Citoyotton said. “Even our MMA strikers love the Stamp Fairtex. It’s much crisper and cleaner than 99.9 percent of our competitors’ rosters.”

This is one of those cases where Chatri isn’t completely accurate about details about a fighter in the UFC, but most of the time he’s right. It’s also pretty rare to see a bad ONE card.
