No catchweight: Bill Haney storms ahead for Devin Haney vs. Gervonta Davis showdown

Trainer Bill Haney is taking a strong stance today, stating that his son, WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney, will not agree to a catchweight or hydration clause in a potential fight against Gervonta Davis, a strong favorite. Haney believes that such conditions are unnecessary.

Unless Bill changes his stubborn and inflexible attitude towards imposing no weight limit for the fight, it’s unlikely that Haney will face Tank Davis.

Bill seems fixated on the notion that his son, Devin, needs a significant weight advantage to win, and this mindset may be hindering potential opportunities for Devin to earn a substantial sum of money.

Tank is not intending to be a “weight bully”; after weighing 140 pounds the day before, he plans to rehydrate up to 170 pounds on fight night. Bill Haney argues that without a catchweight or hydration clause, Devin won’t have the opportunity to make boxing history.

“Rules are rules, let the best win,” Bill Haney said, emphasizing the importance of upholding the existing regulations and not including a catchweight or hydration clause in the match between Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.

Bill’s uncompromising stance may ultimately prevent the highly anticipated match between Gervonta Davis and Haney from materializing.

Perhaps Bill should refrain from making references to tank warfare, as his refusal to accept the rehydration clause and catchweight has essentially dashed any hopes of the fight happening.

If Haney, who weighs over 165 pounds, intends to fight an opponent in the 135-pound weight class, he would be required to agree to a catchweight and rehydration clause to ensure a fair competition.

Bill made it clear that Tank would need to move up to 140 pounds in 2021, a weight class he has previously fought in, and that he and Devin would not agree to a rehydration clause to limit their weight.

Having a hydration clause and catchweight is essential for a 135-pound fighter like Tank. Haney’s substantial weight gain to 165 pounds for his last fight highlights the importance of fair competition.

Prograis appeared to be at a significant disadvantage in his fight against Haney due to the considerable size difference between the two fighters.
