The Lightweight champion of Bellator MMA, Usman Nurmagomedov, is set to defend his title against Alexandr Shabliy in the headline fight of Bellator San Diego on September 7, 2024, in San Diego, California. Originally planned for Bellator Paris last month, the bout was delayed due to an injury.

Nurmagomedov’s most recent match was against Brent Primus at Bellator 300, but it was declared a “No Contest” after he tested positive in a drug screening. Despite being suspended by the California State Athletic Commission, Nurmagomedov was not stripped of his championship and is now gearing up for his next fight since October 2023.

Shabliy secured his title shot by defeating Patricky Pitbull at Bellator 301 in the Lightweight Grand Prix semifinal. This win marked his fifth consecutive victory in Bellator competitions and extended his winning streak to nine fights overall. The tournament was left incomplete due to Bellator’s acquisition by the Professional Fighters League.

Bellator San Diego will be aired on Max in the U.S. and on DAZN in the U.K. starting at 7:30 pm ET.
