Oscar De La Hoya is considering organizing a mega card for next year’s Super Bowl weekend as he calls for “all promoters to come together” to hold a superfight “as always.” Speaking with FightHyoe, De La Hoya said he is excited about the idea of organizing a large-scale “Super Bowl of Boxing” event to be held at the newly opened Sphere Arena in Las Vegas.
Oscar’s idea is to have Ryan Garcia fight Teofimo Lopez or the winner of the Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis fight. And in De La Hoya’s vision, this card would feature Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda, Jaime Munguia vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko (rematch), Edgar Berlanga, and the opening of the big card. The battle will feature Kid Auston vs. Jojo Diaz.
“I attended the Sphere opening and words can’t describe how amazing it was,” De La Hoya told FightHype channel. “So imagine Super Bowl weekend, the Super Bowl of boxing, Ryan Garcia vs. Teofimo Lopez, and even Devin Haney winning Prograis. And then on the undercard you have Shakur vs. William Zepeda. And to close it out, we have Jaime Munguia vs. Derevyanchenko or Berlanga. And to open it up, we have Kid Austin vs. Jojo Diaz. The Super Bowl of boxing. Let’s do this!”
I see, that’s definitely a great idea. It’s kind of a throwback to the stacked cards that Don King (love it or hate him) put out regularly in the 1980s and his 1990s. But how much cash will De La Hoya and Co. need to pull this off? Not to mention that everything went well (for example, Garcia needs a rematch in February to win at the Oscars in December). – He should have no problem winning his return match against Duarte, but Haney and Prograis are also scheduled to fight in February (December, so it will probably be difficult to return after two months).
But at least De La Hoya is thinking big. At least he cares about the fans and gives us what we want. When was the last time you saw a stack of cards on the scale that De La Hoya is trying to create? I say it would be even more powerful if Oscar could pull off these great cards. But then again, it will take a lot of effort, a lot of money, and a good amount of luck to make this “Super Bowl of Boxing” a success.
