Oleksandr Usyk emerged victorious over Tyson Fury in a closely contested rematch this past weekend. The judges unanimously scored the bout 116-112 in favor of Usyk on all three cards, solidifying his status as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
The match was characterized by back-and-forth exchanges, with Usyk maintaining pressure and delivering cleaner hits more consistently. This victory enhances Usyk’s impressive achievements, as he is an Olympic gold medalist, the undisputed cruiserweight champion in 2018, and now the undisputed heavyweight champion. His victories include defeating Fury twice, Anthony Joshua twice, and current IBF champion Daniel Dubois.
Former featherweight champion Naseem Hamed expressed his views on the outcome during an appearance on The Stomping Ground. He disagreed with the broad margin by which the fight was scored.
"I thought it was a lot closer. Fury did really, really well, way better than the first time. I wanted it to be 1-1 so we could have a trilogy fight. I’m upset for Tyson and his friends and family. He needed to cement his legacy."
Despite the defeat, Tyson Fury’s legacy as a great heavyweight remains intact. He boasts noteworthy victories against Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder on foreign soil. Speculation about Fury potentially retiring following this second loss to Usyk has surfaced.
