Contender Series is recognized for its fierce competition and significant stakes. A surprising twist unfolded in the latest installment of season eight, with Quemuel Ottoni backing out of his bout against Kody Steele less than 60 minutes before their scheduled clash.

Reports from the UFC broadcast crew revealed that Ottoni opted out of the fight while having his hands wrapped backstage. UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby verified that Ottoni expressed a desire not to participate and departed from the event after removing his gloves. UFC CEO Dana White commented on the incident, stressing the show’s emphasis on testing mental and emotional resilience.

MMA Fighting tried to contact Ottoni for a statement, but no response was received. Steele, originally slated to fight Ottoni in a lightweight matchup, will receive full compensation for the bout and will get another chance to compete on Contender Series soon.

Steele boasts an unblemished MMA record of 6-0, having most recently secured a third-round TKO victory in April at Fury FC.
