Marc Goddard decided against overseeing the upcoming UFC rematch between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira. Widely respected in the UFC, Goddard faced criticism for his handling of their previous bout, where Adesanya lost to Pereira and forfeited his middleweight title. Due to the controversy surrounding the fight’s stoppage, Goddard requested to be excused from officiating their rematch at UFC 287 five months later.
During a discussion on the Overdogs Podcast, Goddard elaborated on his choice, explaining his desire to avoid any potential negativity associated with the fighters. He believed it was in the best interest of all parties involved for him to step aside. Goddard also cited another incident where he turned down an officiating opportunity, mentioning his decision to never referee a match featuring Leon Edwards. This stance stemmed from their past relationship when Goddard coached Edwards as an amateur, aiming to uphold professionalism and prevent conflicts of interest.
Furthermore, Goddard voiced his apprehension about being placed in a situation where he might unconsciously show bias against Edwards, reiterating his firm resolve to abstain from refereeing any of Edwards’ fights.
