The renewed competition between Ronda Rousey and Cris “Cyborg” Justino caught everyone by surprise on August 21, 2024. Both athletes have played significant roles in MMA history, especially during their time in Strikeforce before the UFC absorbed the league. Rousey, in particular, became a huge star in the sport and was instrumental in paving the way for women to join the UFC.

Rousey pondered on the challenges women faced in the UFC and how she contributed to securing their position in the organization following Strikeforce’s shutdown. She also condemned Cyborg for allegedly using steroids, which had a negative impact on the division’s reputation. However, Cyborg shrugged off Rousey’s criticism and emphasized her successful career despite one failed drug test.

Even though the rivalry between Rousey and Cyborg seems to have reignited, both fighters have left an indelible mark on the sport. Rousey retired with a respectable 12-2 record, whereas Cyborg boasts an impressive 27-2 record with one no contest. The future of women’s divisions in the UFC is uncertain, as Rousey mentioned the organization’s openness to experimentation, including the possibility of closing divisions.
