Shakur Stevenson has announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 26. In a social media post early Tuesday morning, he stated, “I am officially retiring from the sport of boxing. I’m going to be in the gym forever honing my skills and helping the next generation become great and chase their dreams, but I’m not going to be against this weak boxing match.” This decision is not uncommon in the world of boxing, where external factors often affect a boxer’s career.

Stevenson, a three-division titlist, has had a successful career, including winning a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics and amassing a 21-0 record. Many believe that the Newark, New Jersey native will eventually return to the ring, as his talent would be sorely missed in the sport if he chooses not to.

In his last match against Edwin De La Santos, Stevenson’s performance was not up to his usual standards, leaving fans and analysts disappointed. Although it was a lackluster performance, it is not necessarily indicative of the end of his career. Stevenson did not provide specific reasons for his retirement announcement, other than referencing “this weak boxing match” in his social media post.
