In a surprising turn of events in San Diego, Denys Berinchyk managed to defeat Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO lightweight title, just shortly after Oleksandr Usyk’s triumph over Tyson Fury. Navarrete, boasting a record of 38-2-1, faced the undefeated Berinchyk in a 12-round bout. The winner of this match was set to join the ranks of renowned fighters such as Vasyl Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, and Tank Davis. However, on this particular Saturday, neither boxer demonstrated the same caliber as those distinguished names. The fight unfolded as a messy showdown, with both opponents employing awkward tactics that resulted in few impactful punches being landed.
Despite the lack of refined technique, the battle broadcasted on ESPN still managed to deliver excitement. Navarrete’s style always guarantees action, and Berinchyk showcased a strong resolve. Nonetheless, the overall performance failed to live up to the standards expected of a championship bout. Ultimately, Berinchyk emerged victorious, clinching the WBO title through a split decision by the judges. Although Berinchyk added his name to the list of Ukrainian titleholders, his victory didn’t shine as brightly as Usyk’s earlier triumph.
