Mikey Musumeci has lost his ONE Championship flyweight grappling title due to his failure to make weight for a scheduled bout against Bebeto Oliveira at the ONE 168 event in Denver. Musumeci shared that he was hospitalized with pneumomediastinum.

Originally set to compete against Kade Ruotolo in a 170-pound fight, Musumeci had to step in to defend his flyweight title at short notice. However, he missed weight and could not pass the hydration test, leading to the title being stripped from him.

Musumeci took to social media to disclose his battle with pneumomediastinum, a serious condition resulting from a lung tear during the weight-cutting process. He expressed relief that he did not engage in the fight as it could have had fatal consequences.

ONE Championship faced backlash for removing Musumeci of the title following his failure to meet the weight requirement for the 135-pound match on such short notice. CEO Chatri Sityodtong clarified that it was Musumeci’s choice to drop to the lower weight class after Ruotolo pulled out of the fight.

Despite the controversy, ONE Championship has not yet named a new contender for the vacant flyweight grappling title.
