Dustin Poirier faced a tough battle during his recent UFC 302 championship match against Lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev on June 1, 2024. Although he fell short in the final round, Poirier showed great determination and skill, performing notably better than in his previous title bouts. Unfortunately, he suffered multiple injuries, including a broken nose, rib, and a partially torn ACL. Poirier explained on Twitter that the knee-to-face impact was accidental but particularly painful due to a previous head collision. The 35-year-old fighter had considered retiring before the fight, and while he has not yet made a decision about his future in the sport, he intends to take time off to recuperate with his loved ones.

Even though Poirier has not claimed a UFC world title in his extensive career, he is widely regarded as one of the premier athletes in the Lightweight division. Notably, he did win the interim title in a rematch against Max Holloway in April 2019. Throughout his career, Poirier has delivered memorable performances, whether emerging victorious or putting up a fierce fight.
