Teddy Atlas, a respected boxing trainer and commentator, believes Joe Louis deserves to be recognized as the greatest heavyweight boxer in history, challenging the popular view that Muhammad Ali holds that distinction.
Atlas, who has trained numerous notable fighters such as Mike Tyson, Michael Moorer, Timothy Bradley, Alexander Povetkin, and Oleksandr Gvozdyk, made this statement on his YouTube channel. He notably guided Moorer to the world heavyweight title in 1994 and currently operates a YouTube channel called ‘The Fight’.
In a recent video, Atlas explained his choice of Louis, proclaiming, “Joe Louis has rightfully earned the title of the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.” His decision was influenced by Louis’ legendary victory over Max Schmelling in 1938, a fight that transcended the boxing world with its profound historical significance just before World War II. Louis represented the United States, while Schmelling was associated with Nazi Germany, making the match a global spectacle that even drew attention from the US President.
The historic showdown took place at Yankee Stadium, where Louis delivered a devastating knockout of Schmelling in the very first round. Atlas described the performance as an overwhelming demonstration of power, focus, and unwavering determination: “He obliterated his opponent with an intense display of strength, focus, and determination to both the body and head.”
