Terence Crawford has picked his toughest opponent, and it’s not who you might expect. The undefeated champion, who’s won all 41 of his professional fights since 2008, says Egidijus Kavaliauskas gave him the most trouble in the ring.
Crawford’s career has been nothing short of stellar. He grabbed his first world title at lightweight and went on to become the undisputed champion in both the super-lightweight and welterweight divisions. He recently added the WBA super-welterweight title to his collection after beating Israil Madrimov in August.
In a chat with Carl Froch on the Froch On Fighting YouTube channel, Crawford surprised many by naming Kavaliauskas, also known as “Egis”, as his toughest opponent. Crawford explained his choice, saying:
“I fought the wrong style and made it tough on myself. He hit me more than any other opponent. We were really fighting, throwing hooks and right hands.”
The fight Crawford’s talking about happened in December 2019 at Madison Square Garden, New York. It was a WBO welterweight title defense and turned out to be quite a show. Crawford won by stoppage in the ninth round, but not before an entertaining back-and-forth battle. He dropped Kavaliauskas in the seventh round and again in the ninth before the fight was called off.
Crawford’s career continues to impress fans and critics alike. He’s even mentioned that he’s been studying the career of his favorite fighter of all time to help him in his own journey, though he didn’t name who that is.
With 31 knockouts in 41 wins, Crawford’s power is clear. But it’s his ability to overcome tough challenges, like the one Kavaliauskas presented, that truly sets him apart in the boxing world.
