Cub Swanson has revealed that he was begged to stop fighting over a decade ago, yet decided to continue with the sport he holds so close to his heart.
Having now emerged victorious on 30 separate occasions, the American has solidified his place as a real fan favorite.
On Saturday night, at UFC Tampa, Cub Swanson produced yet another stunning victory, rendering Billy Quarantillo unconscious with a devastating knockout. The contest, which finished via a horrifying right hand in the third round, earned the brawler a standing ovation and a Fight of the Night bonus.
Following such a sublime performance, the fans were completely split down the middle. On one hand, it’s clear the formidable brawler still has it in the tank to produce moments of magic, but on the other, the victory would be the perfect way to go out.
In the post-fight press conference, Swanson seemed equally conflicted on what to do, revealing that his mother once pleaded with him to retire 11 years ago after sustaining a nasty injury. He said: “My mom and my stepmom both are very close to me. [They] begged me to stop fighting in 2011 when I fractured my face. I could’ve stopped then. I could’ve stopped at any moment. But I always felt like I had more to do, and at this point, I feel like I’ve done a lot. It would have to be something really exciting [to get me to fight again]. We’ll see what happens.”
In his esteemed career, Swanson has carved out an awe-inspiring legacy, with most MMA fighters only capable of dreaming of what he’s achieved. But while putting down the gloves once and for all is an enticing prospect, the Californian has one last clash on his mind.
At the post-fight press conference, he revealed the identity of the man he’d love to share the cage with next.
