It seems that the former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder might be approaching the twilight of his career. Even if he decides to continue competing after his recent tough defeat to Zhilei Zhang in Saudi Arabia, it’s doubtful that the 38-year-old will reach the same level of dominance he once had. However, what will be the lasting impression of the man known as “The Bronze Bomber?” Overall, it will be quite favorable. Despite not clinching the undisputed heavyweight championship, Wilder has certainly left his mark on the sport with some unforgettable moments.
Many still consider Wilder to be one of the hardest hitters in boxing history. Looking back at old footage, it’s tough to find someone with more brute force than Wilder. While legendary punchers such as Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klitschko, George Foreman, Ernie Shavers, Joe Louis, and Jack Dempsey were incredibly formidable, none matched Wilder’s ability to consistently knock out opponents, as seen in fights like his clash with Artur Szpilka.
Wilder also injected excitement into the heavyweight scene post the Klitschko era. His magnetic personality complemented his knockout power, making him a must-see fighter. While he received criticism for his boxing skills, Wilder was more than just a slugger. Most of the time, he managed to land his punches effectively, a fact Tyson Fury can confirm. Despite Fury securing victories over Wilder in two out of their three bouts, he has acknowledged the sheer force behind Wilder’s punches. There are even suggestions that Fury’s battles with Wilder took a toll on him.
Irrespective of any detractors, Wilder made a significant impact on the heavyweight division and earned considerable wealth in the process. While some may argue he was overrated, a closer look at his career shows he would have been a threat in any boxing era. Additionally, he held the WBC heavyweight title for a commendable duration.
Though Wilder has encountered controversies and made controversial remarks, his overall record in the past decade of heavyweight boxing history remains formidable.
