On a snowy day in 2017, I took a train to Manhattan to cover a middleweight title fight between Genady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. Golovkin, the defending champion, was expecting a bout with Canelo Alvarez, while Jacobs, a renowned New York fighter, was considered a top contender in the division.

Jacobs surprised everyone with his strong performance against Golovkin that night, despite being knocked down. Although Golovkin ultimately won the fight through a judge’s decision after twelve rounds, I personally believed Jacobs had performed better. As I made my way back to Grand Central Station in the early hours, I felt like I had witnessed a significant moment in boxing, with Jacobs truly making his mark on the sport.

Even though I supported Golovkin, I couldn’t ignore Jacobs’ remarkable skills and discipline in the ring. In an era where many fighters seek attention, Jacobs stood out for his quiet and humble nature. He has always been a well-liked figure, earning the support of many fans.

Now, after a two-year hiatus, Jacobs is returning to the ring to face Shane Mosley Jr. in Anaheim, California. At 37 years old, Jacobs could easily retire after this fight, but the lack of recognition he has received motivates him to continue. The unforgettable showdown with Golovkin in Manhattan remains a key moment for many, possibly driving Jacobs to once again prove himself in the ring.
