By Jim Calfa: Tim Tse isn’t too worried about Brian Mendoza’s confidence heading into the Oct. 14 game. That’s because he thinks punching Brian Mendoza in the face will make him less confident.
Interestingly, Tszyu has been talking more about Jermell Charlo than his next opponent, Mendoza, leading some to think he may not be 100% focused on this fight.
Tszyu, 28, had been patiently waiting for a title fight with Jermell for more than a year, but it never happened.
Tszyu (23-0, 17 KOs) successfully defended his WBO junior middleweight title against Mendoza (22-0, 216 KOs) at Showtime Boxing at the Gold Coast Convention Center in Broadbeach, Sydney, Australia.
Former WBO 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo moved up to 168 pounds in preparation for last weekend’s fight against Canelo Alvarez. Charlo knew that forcing a fight against Canelo would result in him being stripped of his status by the World Boxing Organization, but he chose to go in that direction anyway. It was well worth it because of the huge purse Jermell got.
Tszyu expects Mendoza to be a tough challenge
Has Tszyu ever met his opponent?
“We’ll see in the night fight. Let’s see,” Tim Tzu told Jay McAllister channel Asked if Brian Mendoza’s extreme confidence could put him at risk for the Oct. 14 match in Sydney,
“Anyone can be confident, but getting punched in the face changes everything.. Everything changes when you get together with someone of a different race.I know that it is [a different breed]so let’s see, ”Tszyu continued.
If Mendoza fights like he did with Sebastian Fundora, he could beat Tszyu, who was impressive in that fight.
Is Mendoza too strong for Tszyu?
“It was a great highlight reel. It was a pretty good knockout, really,” Tszyu said of Brian Mendoza’s seventh-round KO of Sebastian “Towering Inferno” Fandora last April. “The uppercut is good. It feels good when you land a shot like that. It feels good.
“It’s going to be a tremendous challenge for me to play against a style that I’ve never faced before, but I know this is the next 1%. To be in that next 0.01%. You have to defeat every 1.% there.
“I think he’s motivated, he trains hard and he’s surrounded by his boxing friends. That’s about it. He’s not really focused on his opponent. I’m just focused on myself.” Tszyu said of Mendoza.
Tszyu didn’t say much about the Mendoza fight. why?
“I don’t really like talking to my opponents. There’s not much to talk about. I’m not friends with them at that point,” Tsi replied when asked if he had yet had a conversation with Mendoza.
The way Tszyu keeps talking about Jermell Charlo would make you think he’s fighting him on October 14th, not Mendoza. Is Tszyu overconfident?
“I think this will be my last fight in Australia for a while. It feels like home. I feel comfortable there,” Tszyu said of his time in Las Vegas, USA. “That’s where my career dreams come from,” Tszyu said.
