A highly anticipated clash for the undisputed heavyweight championship has hit a major roadblock. The scheduled showdown between WBC titlist Tyson Fury and WBA, WBO, and IBF titlist Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia has been put on hold, following an unfortunate injury suffered by Fury.
Fury sustained a severe cut above his right eye during a training session, leading to a need for urgent medical attention and extensive stitches. This has forced the postponement of the much-anticipated bout, with the rescheduled date yet to be determined.
In a statement, Fury’s promoter Queensberry Promotions confirmed the injury and expressed disappointment over the turn of events.
“WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury suffered an unusual cut during a sparring session in Riyadh, forcing him to postpone his match with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk…a gaping wound above Fury’s right eye. The cut required urgent medical attention and extensive stitches, which will obviously require a recovery period and rule out the fight with Usyk, which will take place on February 17th in Saudi Arabia. .”
Fury, too, expressed his dismay and apologized for the setback, assuring his readiness for the rescheduled fight once he has recovered from the injury.
Alongside this announcement, Fury shared a photo of himself displaying the deep cut near his right eye on Instagram and expressed his determination to bounce back from the setback and make 2024 a big year for his team.
Despite the disappointment, boxing fans remain hopeful for the eventual crowning of an undisputed heavyweight champion, although the sport’s unpredictable nature leaves the timing uncertain.
