As the L.A. wildfires continue to rage, MMA fans are starting to question whether the upcoming UFC 311 card will proceed at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, located southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
This concern seems minor when weighed against the tragic scale of the ongoing disaster, which has already destroyed over 9,000 homes across 35,000 acres and has claimed at least 10 lives. The Pacific Palisades area has been nearly completely devastated, and the fires have now spread to Hollywood Hills.
Hollywood Hills is only about 10 miles north of the Intuit Dome. Although the wildfires are not expected to reach the arena at this time, authorities have chosen to cancel Wednesday’s Rod Wave concert and rescheduled the Trinity-Mission League Showcase originally slated for today, January 10th.
In a recent post, it was noted that the Intuit Dome, which is set to host UFC 311 featuring Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan in just 10 days, has cancelled Rod Wave’s concert and rescheduled the showcase due to the serious fire situation in Los Angeles.
Looking ahead, the next events listed on the Dome’s website include an NBA game on Saturday, January 11th, between the Hornets and the Clippers, a Monday game against the Heat, and a Wednesday matchup against Brooklyn. Of course, UFC 311 is still scheduled for January 18th.
Numerous events in the L.A. region have already been canceled for the January 10-12 weekend, as city resources are severely stretched in their efforts to contain the fire and ensure public safety. Depending on the status of the wildfires and the damage inflicted on other parts of the city, it is quite possible that plans to gather 18,000 people for UFC 311 might be scrapped.
While Dana White is generally assertive about moving forward with events despite natural disasters, he has expressed his intention to support the first responders in L.A. There is hope that the wildfires will soon be brought under control to prevent any further complications. It’s challenging to envision the impact another week of such destructive fires would have on the city.
