Fans of boxing witnessed an array of exciting moments in the ring on Friday night, September 20, 2024. However, not all of them concluded with a bang. A highly touted heavyweight boxer missed out on a potential knockout win as his rival failed to hold onto his mouthpiece.

After a stunning debut victory by Callum Walsh in Ireland, the spotlight shifted to Top Rank Boxing to feature more rising stars in the sport. Among them was the faceoff between the unbeaten heavyweight Richard Torrez and seasoned fighter Joey Dawejko. Torrez, a powerhouse at 25, was not just expected to secure a win but also deliver another knockout.

Torrez seemed headed towards a knockout as he landed impactful punches that rattled Dawejko early in the match, dislodging his mouthpiece in the process. Despite this, Dawejko managed to hang on longer than expected. However, he was eventually disqualified by the referee for repeatedly losing his mouthpiece during the bout.

It’s uncommon for a fight to be halted due to mouthpiece issues, given that fighters usually have well-fitted ones. Yet, Dawejko’s struggle to maintain his mouthpiece in position prompted the referee to step in and safeguard him from a formidable opponent like Torrez.

Check out the highlights of the fight, including the unfortunate disqualification, in the video below:
